- The Pirates of Penzance is an operetta written by William S. Gilbert and Arthur S. Sullivan, which features leotard-clad pirates who dance and sing. Gilbert is mentioned in the description of this pirate leotarrrd.
- Moreover, this seems to be a reference to the 1993 movie What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, in which Leonardo DiCaprio plays the role of Gilbert Grape's retarded younger brother Arnie. Gilbert repeatedly has to explain to Arnie, "... It's 'good night', not 'goodbye'. Goodbye is saying we're going somewhere, but we're not going anywhere." Arnie demonstrates his understanding by latching on to - and repeating - the last few words of the explanation.
