- The name of this effect is a play on the medical term hyphema, a collection of blood in the anterior chamber of the eye that often blocks vision.
- The first line of the description references The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black": "I wanna paint it black / black as night, black as coal."
- The effect may be inspired by Zaphod Beeblebrox's "Peril-Sensitive" sunglasses from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which become opaque to prevent the user from "seeing anything that may disturb them".
