Okay, everyone says that you're not supposed to do this, but now that it's been done, it's totally way better than just a standard lily. You shouldn't feel any gilt about it whatsoever. Even though this 'gold' stuff is worthless, it's awfully pretty. And a lily covered in meat would probably be much less shiny and a lot less pleasant-smelling.

This item and its description are a play on the expression "gilding the lily", which comes from William Shakespeare's King John:
