Familiar Weight is exactly that: the weight of your familiar. Generally, a familiar with a higher weight will be more effective.
The base amount of a familiar's weight is a function of its combat experience. Familiars gain their own experience when you defeat a monster. Normally a familiar obtains one experience point per kill, but some items may change that:
As their experience increases, they gain weight, to a maximum of 20 pounds. Familiars may also gain experience at the Arena.
The following fully automatic tool is invaluable to help you maximize weight gain at the arena:
The base weight (without Familiar Equipment or effects) of a familiar is equal to the square root of its experience (weight = experience1/2) with the minimum weight possible being 1 lb and the maximum being 20 lbs. In other words, a familiar gains a pound at 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225, 256, 289, 324, 361, and 400 experience.
For most familiars, the maximum familiar weight is (ignoring The Wallaby, which affects weight probabilistically):
- 20 lbs base
- 17 from character equipment (10 hat, 2×2 bar whips, 3×1 TP familiars)
- 5 from familiar equipment
- 25 from skills/skill effects
- 51 from item/adventure effects
- for a total of 118 lbs
The Doppelshifter and Exotic Parrot can reach 128 because of their unique familiar equipment; likewise the Pet Rock, Toothsome Rock and Bulky Buddy Box can reach 124. The El Vibrato Megadrone has an even higher possible effective weight due to the El Vibrato helmet charges; it can reach 204.
The following is a comprehensive list of all equipment and effects in the game that affect familiar weight, on top of the familiar's base experience. For ease of reference the data is broken down into several tables. As there are a great number of similar items (many pieces of +5 familiar weight equipment and many pieces of +1 familiar weight tiny plastic accessories), the data is shown first in compact form and then in more detailed forms.
One final note: the Comma Chameleon eats familiar-specific equipment and then performs like that familiar for about 40-49 adventures. It gets +5 weight for the duration, even if the eaten equipment does not usually grant weight.

Percentage Modifiers
Thus far, there are only three effects that affect familiar weight on a percentage basis; these are attained only in Bad Moon. Note that the weight-decreasing of the three effects does not stack, but the attribute bonuses do.
