How does elemental vulnerability work? Also, are shadow and bad spelling the same as physical or just like an element without any resistances (ie does pastalord shield reduce it, that sort of thing)?

Here's a comprehensive list of everything in the game that provides Elemental Resistance. These give resistance against the Hot, Cold, Spooky , Stench and/or Sleaze elements, reducing damage from these elements and allowing you to pass elemental barriers such as those in the Daily Dungeon.

Slime, Shadow, Supercold, and Bad spelling look like elemental damage but do not fit into the five-element scheme. They are not reduced by effects that offer protection from "all elements", including Mysticality classes' innate resistance bonus. Slime damage is reduced by special Slime Resistance effects; similarly, Supercold damage is reduced by special Supercold Resistance effects. Slime and Supercold resistance effects follow the same rules and are calculated in the same way as the elemental resistance effects described below. Shadow and bad spelling damage do not have any special way to reduce them.

Resistance Levels

Items and effects give various strengths of elemental resistance; ranging from weakest to strongest, they are:

*No existing sources give +6 or +8 elemental resistance. The term Smegmatic was stated on a radio show. Negative levels are called Vulnerability.

The sum of all elemental resistances results in a net resistance level for each element, which is listed on the player's character sheet. When a player takes damage of an element that he is resistant to, it is reduced by a percentage based on the Elemental Resistance level. If the base damage is below 30, it is treated as if it were 30 damage. So if a player has 1 level of Hot resistance, which provides 10% resistance, and would take 5 Hot damage, it is reduced by 10% of 30, which is 3, so the player would take 2 Hot damage.

Mysticality classes receive an extra 5% resistance above what is given by their resistance level in the above chart. For example, with Considerable resistance, they would have 45% resistance instead of 40%; with Incredibly High resistance, they would have 93.43% resistance instead of 88.43%. This bonus applies only to damage received, and not on/off tests like in the Daily Dungeon.

Percentage elemental resistance must be calculated from the resistance level using a piecewise function, due to diminishing returns. If R is the net rating on the character sheet, and M is 5 for Myst classes and 0 otherwise, then:

  • for R ≤ 3, %res = 10 × R + M
  • for R > 3, %res = 90 - 50 × (5/6)R - 4 + M

Note that five elemental phials, while not strictly imparting elemental resistance, grant turns where the imbiber is sympathetic to the element of the potion; that is, all of the potion-drinker's (and familiar's) damage output will be of that element, and damage done to the drinker follows elemental damage rules. The phials can only be made with elemental clusters from pulverized Dreadsylvania equipment, and give one of the following effects: Coldform, Hotform, Sleazeform, Spookyform, and Stenchform.

Most of the resistance-imparting items in the game raise one or more elemental resistances by a constant amount.
