Demon of New Wave You're fighting the Demon of New Wave

The rocky island shudders beneath your feet as a tremendous rumbling shakes the cavern. An explosion of lava bursts from the fiery lake, and you cover your face to protect yourself from flying droplets of red-hot magma.

Dramatic organ music fills the air as you slowly lower your hands to witness a monstrosity rise from the molten rock. Wreathed in flames, the demonic horror that once was The Spirit of New Rave Wave levitates into the air, a ghastly red light pouring from his eyes, his ethereal form constantly shifting, silently screaming faces appearing within, writhing and then vanishing like mimes in a fogbank.

Screaming in a decidedly unmusical fashion, he swoops down at you, knocking you backwards. You hit the stone altar heavily and sit, dazed, as the demonic spectre prepares to charge you again.

There is a blinding flash of light, and a chorus of heavenly voices rises in counterpoint to the ominous organ music. You watch, mystified, as your Shagadelic Disco Banjo transforms before your eyes, becoming an ancient banjo, weathered and plain to the untrained eye, but humming with power within, the strings practically vibrating of their own accord. As the light fades, the banjo rises into the air, pulling you to your feet.

The Spirit howls again: "It's over, fool! Disco is dead, and so are you!"

Hit Message(s):

The Spirit makes a noise like the world's most sensitive microphone being placed next to the world's loudest speaker. The impact knocks the wind out of your lungs. Eek! Argh! Eek!

The Spirit tweaks some dials on his mixer, creating a mash-up of the tormented screaming of damned souls with sampled dialogue from your most painful memories. Ow! Ugh! Ugh!

The Spirit slashes at you with long thin claws extended from its ghostly hands. They pass through you, leaving no visible mark, but you're pretty sure your liver just got sliced in half. Ouch! Oof! Eek!

The Spirit screeches like a banshee and flies at you, sailing directly through your chest. You feel your heart stop, and it takes longer than is healthy for it to start beating again. Eek! Ouch! Ouch!

Critical Hit Message:

The Spirit opens his mouth wide, far wider than any physical creature could, and blasts you with a high-pitched sonic assault. Forget burst eardrums; you're pretty sure you can feel your skull caving in. Ouch! Argh! Ouch! Ouch! Oof!

Miss Message(s):

The Spirit makes a terrible screeching noise, but you put your fingers in your ears until he's finished. Whew.

The Spirit tries to spin you a mix of pain and torment, but in his hellfire-fueled rage he can't concentrate well enough to get the beats to match properly. This only makes him angrier, of course.

The Spirit slashes at you with long, ghostly claws. They pass through you without doing any appreciable damage, but they are uncomfortably chilly.

The Spirit howls like a banshee and flies at you -- and through you. This is pretty disconcerting, but there doesn't seem to have been any damage done.

Fumble Message:

The Spirit opens his mouth wide and... well, you don't hear anything. Although, that might be the sound of dogs barking, way off in the distance. (FUMBLE!)

Special Move(s):

The Spirit turns a knob on his mixing board. As the pounding bass swells in volume, so does the Spirit, his writhing smokelike form growing larger as he howls with inarticulate rage.

After Combat

  • Upon defeat:

"Nooooooo!" The Spirit of New Wave howls. "It won't end like this! It can't! You think I'll let you have the last laugh? Never!" With one final, desperate leap, he throws himself at the stone altar. The ancient glyphs flare with a dazzling white light, and the ancient shrine explodes.

You are thrown head over heels, and land on your back on one of the floating stepping-stones. Momentarily stunned, you can only watch as the entire mountain begins to shake. Huge boulders fall from the ceiling, sending gouts of lava spraying out of the lake. You recover your wits just enough to get to your feet and scramble for the tunnel entrance. You risk a quick look backwards -- the central island has collapsed into the magma, and the Spirit is nowhere to be seen.

You make your way through the cavern tunnels as quickly as you can, with the ground shaking under your feet and a wave of molten rock hot on your heels (literally). You pound the button for the antique elevator in a panic, and nearly go insane from the tension as the little metal box slowly carries you back to the surface. You burst through the doors and into the disco, which has already emptied out, and race out of the front doors just ahead of the rockslide that buries the ancient temple forever. Looking up, you see smoke pouring out of the top of the volcano, but it and the earthquake soon subside -- looks like there's not going to be a full-scale eruption, luckily. Fleeing the underground tunnels was one thing, but you wouldn't have bet much on your chances of getting off this island alive if the entire thing had exploded.

Bruised and battered, you stumble away from the club, where the few ravers not either catatonic or freaking the hell out are trying to figure out how to get off the island. They largely ignore you, and you collapse on the beach near your rowboat, panting for breath.

Notes

  • Occurs after Flying In Circles.
  • The Demon's attacks may hit you even if your Moxie is much higher than its Attack.
  • During the Battle, your Shagadelic Disco Banjo transforms into Seeger's Unstoppable Banjo. If you lose the fight, it transforms back with the message:
    You lose. As you slink away, dejected and defeated, your Epic Weapon reverts to its original form in a puff of failure.
    • If you escape through any other method (such as running away or by using an item), then the following is appended onto the usual text:
Your Epic Weapon reverts to its original form in a puff of failure.
  • On every other round, the Demon uses its special move, which increases its Attack. It can use it in the same round as a normal attack.
    The Spirit turns a knob on his mixing board. As the pounding bass swells in volume, so does the Spirit, his writhing smokelike form growing larger as he howls with inarticulate rage.
    • This increases his Attack by +5 the first time he uses it, +7 the second time, +9 the third time, ..., +(2n+1) the nth time.
    • Currently, the Demon can also perform its special move in the same round you quick-cast a skill (such as Stealth Mistletoe or Saucy Salve) or if it is stunned.
  • The Demon has a two-stage damage reduction process:
    • First, all attacks do 60% of their normal damage, rounded up.
    • Second, if the damage dealt from a single source would otherwise be over 75, a soft damage cap kicks in. The resultant damage is ⌊ 75 + (X-75)0.65 ⌋, where X > 75 is the damage before the soft cap.
