There are several factors which go into calculating spell damage:

Each class of spells, Pasta and Sauce, interacts with elemental Bonus Spell Damage in a different way.

Spell Damage Explained

Without any items or effects, the damage done by a spell depends only on that spell's base range and your buffed Mysticality. Each spell adds a percentage of your Mysticality to the damage it deals, but for most spells there is a cap to this additional damage.

Bonus Absolute Spell Damage

Some items or effects add a set amount of bonus damage to spells. Sometimes this is a generic bonus, but other times it will apply only to spells of a certain element. Note that elemental forms (Coldform, Hotform, Sleazeform, Spookyform, and Stenchform) do not truly change the element of a spell for this purpose, only the damage dealt by it.

Damage Caps and Splashback

Most spells (apart from Weapon of the Pastalord, Fearful Fettucini, and Saucegeyser) have a cap on how much Bonus Spell Damage can be applied. If this cap is surpassed, instead of the surplus dealing damage to the monster, splashback occurs (inflicting damage to the incorrect class, or granting a special effect to the correct class when using Sauce spells). Note that this is independent of the maximum bonus Mysticality will provide each spell.

Saucerors' and Pastamancers' spells are different, in that elemental Bonus Spell Damage counts towards the spell damage cap of Saucerors, while Pastamancers can have as much elemental Bonus Spell Damage as they want.

When a Sauceror creates splashback by casting a sauce spell, this will create a special effect instead of dealing damage.

Bonus Percentage Spell Damage

Some items and effects grant a percentage boost to spell damage. This is applied after any cap on spell damage has been applied.

Examples

A Sauceror and Pastamancer with the following equipment and stats:

They both have a total of +20 generic spell damage, +20 Cold spell damage and +150% spell damage. Casting cold Wave of Sauce and Stuffed Mortar Shell respectively, so that the elemental bonus damage applies:

 Wave of Sauce Damage
 = 2.5 × ([20 to 24] + capmyst30(0.3 × 160) + capabsolute25(20 + 20))
 = 2.5 × ([20 to 24] + 30 + 25)
 = 187.5 to 197.5
 Stuffed Mortar Shell Damage
 = 2.5 × ([16 to 40] + capmyst30(0.25 × 160) + capabsolute60(20) + 20)
 = 2.5 × ([16 to 40] + 30 + 20 + 20)
 = 215 to 275
