- Blue ribbon is a term used to describe something of high quality. Blue ribbons have also been awarded as prizes, such as competitions at fairs or rodeos.
- The reference to "keeping an eye on your spleen" is a reference to the novelty folk song "The Scotsman," in which a Scotsman wakes up from a drunken stupor to find a blue ribbon tied around his penis. The song ends with the Scotsman saying, "Lad, I don't know where you been/But I see you won first prize.".
