There are five main elements in the Kingdom of Loathing: hot, cold,
spooky, stench, and sleaze. Each of the five main elements deals double
damage to creatures of its two opposing elements, minimal damage to
creatures of its own element, and normal damage to all other creatures.
This diagram illustrates the relationship between the elements:

There are eight total levels of elemental resistance, as appear on your character sheet:
- meager
- minor
- modest
- middling
- moderate
- major
- mighty
- maximal
Each
level of elemental resistance an item provides reduces damage from that
element 10%, after all other sources of damage have been resolved.
Items can give you various levels of elemental resistance:
- slight
- so-so
- serious
Each
level of elemental resistance an item has gives your character another
level on the scale of elemental resistance on your character sheet. For
instance, if you had an item which provided so-so cold resistance, and
another which provided slight cold resistance, you would have a total
of 2+1 = 3, or modest, cold resistance from these cold items, and 30%
of cold damage dealt to you would be absorbed.
Each element has a Gravy Fairy attuned to it, in addition to the Baby Gravy Fairy. Information on creating each fairy can be found in the Familiars section of Coldfront.
You can deal any type of damage you choose with the 14th level
Pastamancer skill Flavour of Magic,
which allows you to deal damage of any element you choose. Without this
skill active, the elements of Pastamancer spells are randomly chosen
from one of the five basic elements. The 14th level Sauceror skill Immaculate Seasoning allows you to always cast spells
of your target's weakness; therefore, if your target is weak to fire,
your spells will be fire. Without this skill, Sauceror spells are
randomly either hot or cold.
You will see two other elements in the kingdom: shadow and bad
spelling. Shadow damage is dealt only by your shadow in the Sorceress'
Lair. It cannot be resisted or stopped in any way. Bad spelling damage
is confined to the Valley of the Orc Chasm; bad spelling creatures are
vulnerable to a dictionary. These are considered lesser elements. Their
damage is treated as normal physical damage for elemental purposes.
Items and spells that provide resistance against all elements do not
work against them.
